Lap band surgery is a restrictive type procedure. It doesn’t use any stapling or re-routing of the gastrointestinal tract as does gastric bypass surgery. Lap-band surgery is relatively safe and minimally invasive. Most importantly it promotes fairly rapid weight loss by reducing food intake.
Lap Band uses an inflatable restrictive band that is secured to the upper portion of the stomach. This creates a small pouch that limits the amount of food you can eat. Tubing is connected to a port that is placed under the skin. The size of the band restriction can be adjusted to allow for the best level of food consumption for you. Your Austin area lap-band surgeon will work with you to determine the best level of restriction for your weight loss.
Lap-band surgery is reversible, whereas gastric bypass surgery is typically a permanent procedure. There is a smaller leak rate with lap-band as opposed to gastric bypass. There can be some slippage of the silicone band, thus resulting in more repeat surgeries with lap-band as compared to gastric bypass surgery. Appetite suppression is mild and weight loss is typically more gradual with lap-band. Overall, both procedures have their place. Your bariatric surgeon will help you decide whether gastric bypass or lap band surgery is appropriate when you visit the Austin office. Our surgeons are experienced in both lap band and gastric bypass surgeries.
