Roux-en-Y is a “permanent” weight loss surgery option and has been used for over 30 years. It is mostly performed on men that are over 100 lbs and women who are over 80 lbs of their ideal body weight.. Patients with a  Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40kg/m2 are also good candidates for this gastric bypass surgery option. Although there are some general guidelines for qualifying for this surgery, Texas Bariatric Specialists practice a “no exclusion” policy. So, what exactly is gastric bypass surgery?
Roux-en-Y, or gastric bypass surgery, is a rerouting of the digestive tract. Basically a smaller stomach is created by forming a pouch. Your gastric surgeon will then connect your small intestines to the pouch bypassing the duodenum, the first part of the small intestines. You are left with the ability to consume between one to two ounces of food and liquid. Because you are not able to eat a large amount of calories and because calorie absorption is reduced, weight loss is rapid. With Texas Bariatric Specialists in Austin you are in good hands. Dr. Patel is one of only two Fellowship-Trained and Centers of Excellence Surgeons in Bariatric Surgery in all of South Texas and the only one in Austin.
