Are you at risk and there is a clear-cut evidence that the higher your body mass index (see MBI calculator below) is the higher the risk of developing an obesity related disease or of premature death. More simply put, a high body mass index (>40kg/m2) is a risk factor for premature death. The graph below demonstrates that as your body mass increases across the bottom of the graph you have a higher chance of dying across the side of the chart. Once your biomass index exceeds 40kg/m2, you see that you have a two and half times higher chance of dying. The risk of a high body mass index this risk is a cumulative risk which increases over the course of time. Some studies estimate that a BMI of just 40 can put you at 2.5 times higher risk of death compared to normal weight individuals. The risk of death is based upon your weight in addition to assumed co-morbidities that would develop over time.
Risk of death is not the only way that you are at risk. Significant health risk related to obesity also include:
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation derived from your height and weight. It is commonly used to categorize weight as follows:
Normal : BMI 18.0-24.9
Overweight : BMI 25.0-29.9
Obese : BMI 30.0-39.9
Morbidly Obese : BMI 40.0 or higher
